[edit] nesDS M3 Overview

As the name suggests, nesDS is a NES emulator for the DS. It can load individual .nes files right off your flash card. It also allows you to pack .nes files into the nesDS rom itself, eliminating the need to store .nes files on your flash card.

In order to work, nesDS.nds must be copied to a directory in root named 'apps'. Individual roms must be copied to a directory in root named 'nes'.

The game is shown on the upper screen. Touching the lower screen with the stylus will open a menu with display options and load/save states.

[edit] M3 CF

The following two methods are for M3 CF, and they will not work for M3 SD.

[edit] Packed roms

  1. Run nesDS.exe
  2. Click the open folder icon to find your NES roms
  3. Select all your NES roms by dragging a window around all of them
  4. The menu should now show all the NES roms you selected
  5. Click the Sort icon to sort the list
  6. Click the Save icon
  7. Copy the nesDS.ds.gba file from the nesDS directory to your CF card. You don't need to rename the file and don't use the M3 game manager.

[edit] Individual roms

  1. Make sure you have NdsTool.exe in your nesDS directory.
  2. Run make_nds.bat
  3. Don't select any roms
  4. Click Save
  5. Copy nesDS.nds NOT nesDS.ds.gba to CF card directly (no game manager)
  6. Copy roms to CF card
  7. Run nesDS on M3 and now you can select roms off the CF card, and you can add and remove roms without rebuilding nesDS

[edit] M3 SD

The latest version of nesDS (dated 12-30-2005) appears to not support loading individual .nes files via M3 SD. nesDS itself fails to load from the M3 SD when stored as a .ds.gba rom. This leaves M3 SD users with only the option of building an .nds rom with packed .nes files.

  1. Make sure you have NdsTool.exe in your nesDS directory.
  2. Run make_nds.bat
  3. Click More >>
  4. Select the .nes roms to pack into nesDS.
    • NOTE: Keep your eye on the Total KB line on the nesDS window, and make sure that it does not exceed 4096 KB. If it does, remove roms from your pack list until the Total KB comes back down to 4096 KB or less. nesDS.nds will fail to load on the M3 if it is larger than 4 MB!
  5. Click Sort
  6. Click Save as nesDS.nds
  7. Copy nesDS.nds to your SD card. Do not use M3 Game Manager.
